Two main phonemes are the focus of today’s reading: the sound ‘or’ and then ‘ui’. Both are difficult to pronounce as they have no equivalent in the English language. The letter (grapheme) ‘r’ is very guttural and needs to gently come from the back of your throat. The phoneme ‘ui’ is to be pronounced with what I call a pinched mouth. In this traditional song the miller has fallen asleep and his windmill is turning too fast. Some windmills in France were fitted with a bell device which rang on each turn of the sails and allowed the miller to hear if they were turning too fast- which could mean the flour would be spoilt. In the second verse the wind is blowing hard, again causing the sails to turn too fast.
